Maryland resident tells York jury he beat her when she tried to leave
www.ydr.com – A Jacobus man was found not guilty of the most serious charges he faced, including aggravated assault, a felony, in connection with an alleged assault on a Maryland woman he met through Match.com.
Bruce Kevin Davies, 47, of the first block of Greenbriar Drive, was found guilty of simple assault and recklessly endangering another person. Both of those charges are misdemeanors.
He was found not guilty of the remainder of the charges: aggravated assault; terroristic threats with the intent to terrorize another, unlawful restraint/serious bodily injury, and false imprisonment.
A jury rendered the verdict at the end of court on Wednesday after hours of deliberation.
Davies’s attorney, Tim Barrouk, said his client has denied the charges throughout, and they respect the jury’s verdict.
“I agree with the jury the evidence did not support the charges,” Barrouk said.
The nature of the injuries did not support serious bodily injury, he said.
The woman, whose name is not being published, told police she had met Davies through Match.com. She decided to spend two days at Davies’s home after several dates and multiple interactions with him through telephone and email, according to court documents.
The woman testified that Davies had hit her and refused to let her leave his home in March 2013. The prosecution presented photographs of her injuries during the trial.
Barrouk said he did not call any witnesses for the defense.
Senior prosecutor Kelley Nelson said it was a difficult case, but she thinks justice has been served.
“I think their verdict was a fair one,” she said.
Davies remains free on $40,000 bail.
Judge Gregory M. Snyder scheduled sentencing for 9 a.m. Oct. 20. He ordered Davies not to have any contact with the victim.
