A man facing charges stemming from a nine-hour standoff with police has retained private counsel, but a preliminary hearing in his case has not yet been scheduled.
Roy R. Freed, 31, of 16 Stoneroad Court, Lewistown is charged with aggravated assault and related offenses in connection with the Jan. 8 standoff at his residence.
According to court documents, the standoff began around 8:30 p.m. that evening, when a young female caller contacted the Mifflin County 911 Dispatch Center. The caller yelled into the phone “He has a gun! Roy has a gun!” and said there was fighting inside the residence.
Nine hours later, after numerous attempts by police officers to coax Freed out of the residence, he surrendered to members of the Pennsylvania State Police Western Regional Special Emergency Response Team. Police said no one was injured in the incident.
*District Attorney Steven Snook said Freed has hired defense attorney Adam Bompadre, of Harrisburg, to represent him in the case.*
Snook did not know if Freed is planning to request a hearing in the case, but said it seems likely he will.
Bompadre was unavailable for comment Wednesday, and a representative from Magisterial District Judge Tammy Hunter’s office said a hearing has not yet been scheduled.
Pending further court action, Freed remains in the Mifflin County Correctional Facility in lieu of $200,000 bail.
