It’s Legal for Police to Lie to Suspects

Police officers are powerful.  They are trained in how to interrogate suspects with the goal of getting a confession.  Interrogations often last for many hours, even days and suspects get worn out after an endless string of leading questions.  All of this while being intimidated by the power they have.

One tool that the police use that makes them even more powerful is the fact that they can flat out lie to suspects.  And this is perfectly legal.

Police will say things like, “We have videos showing that you committed this crime.” Or they may say, “Your fingerprints were found on the weapon.”  These questions can confuse and intimidate suspects.  Many of them confess because they believe the court will take it easier on them than if they were to be found guilty based on this non existent evidence against them.

In the video below, John Oliver gives a detailed account of the problems in police interrogations and why police should not be allowed to lie.
