Starting yesterday, Uber announced that users can book a fully autonomous, driverless “Robotaxi”. Robotaxis are currently available in Las Vegas where users will now have the option to ride in an IONIQ 5 mid-sized crossover, a vehicle Motional designed with Hyundai. Uber plans to launch its public robotaxi service in Los Angeles next.
Whenever there are new advancements, there are always legal questions like: Can I get a DUI if I’m a drunk passenger in an Uber Robotaxi?
The simple answer is no. Passengers in a robotaxi have no physical control over the vehicle meaning, even in an emergency, the passenger is not able to make decisions for the vehicle. In fact, passengers will be riding in the back seat and there will be vehicle operators in the front who can take control in an emergency.
So if you are impaired, a robotaxi is a smart call.
